In 2020, there were over 100 cinemas in London, each one a refuge for romantic souls: from teenagers to ageing roués.
“In a movie he could dream without effort; all he had to do was lean back in a seat and keep his eyes open.” (Richard Wright in "Native Son")
In a post-pandemic world (and beleaguered by the rising power of streaming services), we don't yet know how many of our cinemas will survive. What we do know is that those neighbourhoods that keep their local movie theatres alive will retain a strong cultural pulling power. Netflix behind net curtains is nice...but it ain't the same as an evening at the real flicks.
You can use the map above to examine the geographical distribution of London's cinemas. Use the filter to choose a borough and the map will automatically zoom into that part of town. Then, hover your cursor over any of the dots and a lightbox will appear, displaying the name of the cinema, its street location and its postcode.
