LONDON | DEEP-DIVE | VIBRANCY | BAKERIES

Fresh Bread

There are over a thousand bakeries in London, whose daily production provides sustenance both corporeal and spiritual.

"She sent out for one of those short, plump little cakes called 'petites madeleines,' which look as though they had been moulded in the fluted scallop of a pilgrim's shell." (Marcel Proust)

For many of us, there are few vicissitudes in life that a good bakery cannot alleviate. To get up in the morning while the rest of the household is still fast asleep. To stroll over to the local bakery. To return with warm packages of loaves and rolls and croissants. These are forms of meditation as ancient (and as healing) as the hills.

You can use the map above to examine the geographical distribution of London's bakeries. Use the filter to choose a borough; and the map will automatically zoom into that part of town. Then, hover your cursor over any of the dots and a lightbox will appear, displaying the name of the bakery, its street location and its postcode.
